Where this data comes from
Every listing starts from public records — NPPES NPI Registry (CMS), NUCC Health Care Provider Taxonomy — not from who paid to be listed. A Registry-checked badge means we matched the business to an active public record, dated. Read the methodology →
Common questions
What is the difference between a prosthetist and an orthotist?
A prosthetist designs, fits and adjusts artificial limbs (prostheses). An orthotist does the same for braces and supports (orthoses). Many practitioners are certified in both. Certification is issued by organizations such as the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics and the Board of Certification/Accreditation.
Do I need a prescription for a prosthesis or brace?
Usually yes. Insurers, including Medicare, generally require an order or prescription from a physician or other qualified practitioner, and may require records showing medical need. Ask the practice what your insurer requires before the first visit.
Does an NPI mean the practice is certified or licensed?
No. An NPI is a billing identifier. The business chose its specialty when registering and NPPES does not check it. Some records list a state license number; confirm it with the state board.
Does Medicare cover prosthetics and orthotics?
Medicare Part B covers prosthetic devices and many braces when they are medically necessary and supplied by a Medicare-enrolled supplier. Rules differ by device, so ask the practice and check Medicare.gov.
How do I choose between two practices?
Compare the certification of the practitioner who will fit you, experience with your kind of amputation or condition, how many follow-up visits are included, warranty, repair turnaround and insurance participation.
